Description:
The Summer Institute in Astronomy is designed for high school students who love astronomy and are interested in pursuing an education in the physical sciences or math. The institute is conducted at the Stull Observatory on the Alfred University Campus. The program is staffed by faculty of the Alfred University physics department. The Institute covers topics like: astronomical basics, variable star photometry, asteroid astrometry and photometry, astronomical imaging of nebulae, clusters, and galaxies, observation and analysis of solar activity, imaging and analysis of solar system objects, lunar and planetary science, asteroids, solar flares, stellar evolution, CCD imaging, galactic structure, cosmology and spectroscopy. When not in classes, students enjoy planned recreational activities which may include indoor and outdoor games, movies, a visit to nearby Foster Lake for picnics and campfires, swimming, hiking, social gatherings at the Terra Cotta Coffee House and a farewell party on the last night. Living, dining and learning together, students have ample opportunity to get to know each other and develop lasting friendships.
