NYSID's Pre-College ONLINE Summer Program
Discover a Career in Interior Design

Description:
The New York School of Interior Design’s ONLINE Pre-College programs, open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, will immerse you in the practice of interior design. These courses will build your portfolio, answer questions about your future, and a give you head start in interior design.
040 Pre-College I Monday–Friday, July 6–17 (10 sessions/10 am–2 pm)
Learn the basics of interior design, and complete a residential design project. In this course, you will acquire drafting skills, learn to understand floor plans, come up with a design concept, put together a color scheme, and select furniture and materials. An outstanding part of the experience is visiting design showrooms and the offices of New York professional interior designers. Once you’ve pulled together all your new knowledge, you’ll use it to design your own dream apartment.
041 Pre-College II Monday–Friday, July 20–31 (10 sessions/10 am–2 pm)
Take your basic knowledge of interior design to the next level. In this course, the assignment is to design a café and hotel lobby. Learn how to meet the demands of designing a public space and working with a client. Pre-College I is a prerequisite for Pre-College II.
Pre-College Art & Design Intensives
011 The 7 Elements of Art I: Color, Form, and Space
Session A: Monday–Friday, June 15–19 (5 sessions/10 am–1 pm) or
Session B: Monday–Friday, July 6–10 (5 sessions/2–5 pm)

Color is one of the most exciting aspects of both art and design. For one week, you’ll dive into color: how colors interact, amplify, and play with each other. You’ll complete a small interior design project inspired by color. Can you imagine a room inspired by van Gogh’s “Starry Night?” After choosing a favorite work of art, students will create an interior that captures its color palette, imagery, and sense of space.
012 The 7 Elements of Art II: Line, Value, Texture, and Shape
Session A: Monday–Friday, June 22–26 (5 sessions/10 am–1 pm) or
Session B: Monday–Friday, July 13–17 (5 sessions/2–5 pm)

What are the basic elements of art? How are these the foundation for design? Develop the skills to create and develop the elements of art, from line, to shape, to form. Understand how to apply what you’ve learned to a small design project.
013 Intro to the Principles of Design: Rhythm, Balance, Variety, and Harmony Session A: Monday–Friday, June 29–July 3 (5 sessions/10 am–1 pm) or Session B: Monday–Friday, July 20–24 (5 sessions/2–5 pm)
What does a fabric pattern have to do with space? Students will explore the designs and patterns used in a three-dimensional space and will develop in 2D, such as a textile pattern that incorporates the fundamental principles of design. Students will develop a concept or story behind the design they will develop.
